When I chased “new grad friendly” roles, I only moved forward if they could spell out a structured 10–12 week orientation with a named preceptor — vague answers usually meant sink-or-swim. Ask for a single shadow shift before accepting; one 4-hour shadow showed me the preceptor was covering two units, so I passed and found a better fit a week later. Not every hospital allows shadows, but if they don’t, press for the exact orientation timeline and preceptor ratio.

I only signed after the manager put supernumerary for the entire orientation, 1:1 preceptor, and max 2 patients weeks 1–4 in my offer email — if they won’t put it in writing, ask to meet the unit educator and peek at the skills checklist, @SamRN. Smaller hospitals may flex timelines, but having ratios locked in kept me sane. Did anyone else get ratios in writing?

But “.ratios in writing?” I couldn’t get that, but I did get ‘no charge during orientation’ added to the offer and it made a huge difference — worth asking for?
